Hard Time eBook Alex Laybourne

HARD TIME: A Dinosaur Thriller, an e-book by Alex Laybourne is an almost non-stop action packed story set in a future time in California.
Peter Malone, at nineteen is the youngest new officer at Kruger Correctional which had light and heavy offense housing areas. He had enlisted in the Marines at eighteen and transferred at his request at nineteen because he wanted to know more about his father who had been an inmate. He had burst into Warden Walker’s office at an inopportune moment and to mitigate the warden’s wrath, he told him that he had been sent by Captain Jones to inform him without delay that a man had to be paroled from the heavy offense area – a situation that never happened because none ever survived. The warden insisted upon seeing Jones and when it was verified, set up an extraction team and insisted that Peter be assigned as part of the team. They arrived and found themselves on an island that was a throwback in time inhabited by all manner of dinosaurs and other creatures of this pre-historic era. A situation developed that could be likened to a Jurassic Park scenario gone horrendously bad.
The plot is interesting, the characters acceptable and the action is fast, furious and bloody. The equipment with which the extraction team individually are provided seem woefully inadequate especially if the parent organization had even the remotest idea about the island. The end is diverting.
3* Mayhem in dinosaur land.

Hard Time eBook Alex Laybourne Reviews

Okay read, nothing special
I enjoyed reading this book a break from horror stories that are generally the same
Hard Time is a fun Dino thriller, I carved through it very quickly and happily. I hope there will be a sequel someday, though, it deserves one!
It's quite obvious that this is the island in Jurassic Park II and III. The same dinosaurs with a couple of additions. Peter is a lucky idiot as he survives not by his brains.
Extremely short. Should have paid more attention to the page length. Lots of spelling errors. Really wish the author would have spent time explaining the technology of the time and how they were able to travel to the prison. But, the book is extreemly fast paced, and does not let up on the action all the way through. Loved the descriptions of the world and the ceatures, and thought the action sequences were well written. I really didnt want the book to end.
I think it’s only fair to say I’m a huge fan of the sci-fi angle with dinosaurs, and as a fan of the author’s other work it was only a matter of time until I got to this one. First off, I loved the synopsis. I think the idea of a prison sending their prisoners doing hard time to a prehistoric world is a perfect fit in the dystopian genre.

The “out of sight, out of mind” thought process really hits home when the guards are sent to retrieve the lone prisoner to ever make it through his sentence alive. The thought of being in a place where you’re surrounded by plants and animals, yet unable to see them is terrifying, and I thought that was captured with the story’s claustrophobic nature. Add to that the fun of witnessing a different way for the creatures to eat the men made it a fun and entertaining plot.

The characters were an interesting mix with the guards offering a civilized approach to nature while the prisoners adopted a wild animal type of personalities similar to what we hear of real prisons. I do have to admit I’m curious how or why they couldn’t find a way to come together to build something for their mutual benefit. It could just be the optimist in me. lol

One thing that bothered me was the ending. The author’s approach didn’t bother me as much as the how of a certain pair came about. I don’t want to go into greater detail due to spoilers, but it’s an interesting idea that leaves open the potential for a sequel. I did love the fight scene near the end, as my favorite dinosaur won, but I’ll leave the details to you all to figure out.

If you’re a fan of dinosaurs, sci-fi, and dystopian settings, then this is the thing for you.
God I love when books aren't too long. The dinosaurs in the book could've been a little better described. Many of them,
even if they were supposed to be different species, were kinda described in the exact same way. Sometimes I had it
difficult to distinguish between them. The main character, Peter ( The one of which the story focuses most of its time
on ), he... Well, there wasn't anything captivating or interesting about him. He was so boring for the most part, but I
could bare with it, y'know. I've read much worse stuff than this. Alex Laybourne's writing is simple, understandable but
I found some confusing sentences that I believe the author probably didn't mean to write. And I believe I found some
other minor errors, which annoyed me a bit. I'm not gonna lie. I would'nt be surprised if this book was self-published but
I am not saying that as a form of insult. Not at all actually. I do enjoy a lot of short, simple and easy novels that aren't
so similar to mainstream books that major publishers sell. Hard Time will probably be an okay read for anybody who
likes Jurassic Park, Turok, Dino Crisis or Dane Hatchell's books about Patagonia, although his novels are a lot better
than this.
