You're not alone. Millions of Americans want a deeper understanding of their country's founding principles and don't know where to start. When the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were written by our founders over two centuries ago, they were designed to endure. And indeed they've remained, as Paul Skousen writes, "the most amazing freedom formula ever invented"--but navigating eighteenth-century legal language can be challenging.
Recognizing this problem, Skousen provides an easy, step-by-step guide that will forever change the way you think about your country and your freedoms. Using visual tools, exercises, and several valuable memory aids, this book will help you
* Master the Constitution's seven articles and the twenty-seven important rights named in the Bill of Rights.
* Navigate the Declaration's five power statements on freedom and unlock their eighteenth-century phrases with a convenient glossary.
* Find the answers to ten popular myths about the Constitution.
* Discover how the Constitution's guiding principles protect human rights.
* And so much more.
Thousands of books describe the origins of these famous documents, but only How to Read the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence gives you a path to truly understanding them.

[edited from the original for clarity] I would be careful using this book as a single source to read the documents.I suggest that it has a bias in that it mentions a “3rd Version of the Constitution” which is not a new document but the author’s statement about the current controversy concerning how the Constitution has been applied in certain decisions over the last 100 years and is therefore “not working”. It also adds a quiz to the 10th amendment asking the reader how they think the amendment should be applied. This appears to be the only amendment that has this type of opinion quiz.
The reminder of the book treats the Bill of Rights and the Constitution in a relatively straightforward manner. I can only wonder why the author decided to include this particular controversial issue in a introductory book specifically designed for “new immigrants, students just learning and people who don’t have time to learn much beyond reading the documents”. An audience who, due to their recent introduction to the documents, is likely not yet prepared to deal with this controversy.
If it was important to add this "advanced study" topic to a book designed to be an introduction to the documents then the best treatment of the controversy would be to at least introduce both sides of the issue. Since only one side of the issue was presented it does seem to show a specific bias in the controversy of how to read the Constitution in this specific situation. It does not even mention there is controversy concerning this issue.
This book also does not provide any citations to guide the reader for further study which I think is a shortcoming.
I suggest this book should be used as only one text on how to read [and understand] the US Constitution. It has some good, easy to read content for the intended audience. I think it shows a specific bias in the area mentioned above and may add a level of confusion to readers new to the Constitution. Which is why only 2 stars.

How to Read the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence Paul B Skousen 9781534853751 Books Reviews
I thought I had a good working knowledge of our founding documents. But when I read "How to Read the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence," it became evident that I was only just "familiar" with these pertinent, intellectual and influential documents. Skousen's book is easy enough, yet in-depth and thought-provoking enough, to make the reader want to re-read these great documents and glean additional insight into natural law and freedoms. I was astonished at how intertwined the Constitution and Declaration are to each other. They really must be studied side-by-side as provided by Skousen's book. FIVE STARS!
June 12, 2017 UPDATE - I've gone through the latest edition of this book and realized that any claim of partisanship or bias (in the comment section) regarding the latest edition of Skousen's book is, in reality, based on such commentator's own bias against America's founding documents. Skousen cannot edit the text and obvious intent of America's founding documents. The Constitution of the United States and Declaration of Independence were controversial, biased, and inciting from their creation...and therefore removing the alleged "bias" would, in essence, neuter America's founding documents, making them something they are not. Those documents are powerful, effective, and intentionally controversial - controversial, at least, for any person who's intellectual momentum is to subject others.
This short and informative book will refresh your memory about our nation's two most important documents with facts you probably learned in high school civics class and promptly forgot. No matter your political persuasion, if you are an American, you should read this book. It only takes a few hours, and author Paul B. Skousen explains things so well, including memory tricks, that you will likely remember it this time!
Read and study our Constitution, before it's too late!
A very clean, easy, and effective way to get into the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. I wish I had this book years ago when studing these documents in school. It is set up like a tutorial. The structure of each document is discussed and the reader is told what to look for when reading the actual documents. Then a series of quizzes are provided to test your understanding and mastery. Very clean, logical, and well done. Only grief I have is that the author is a conservative. His conservative bias shows through. I am a fairly savvy reader and easily identified the conservative influences. Others just starting out may not be able to distinguish the actual material from the indoctrination. I am probably making more of this than is justified, but I feel that it needs to be mentioned. For this reason I deducted a star.
Interesting, educational read. It has a bit of a conservative slant in some parts. Good background information, helpful.
I really liked the clear and concise way that the book lays out the structure of the constitution, along with what it actually says and the reasons for the separation of powers. It is NOT a "living document" subject to the whims of current fashion and fancy. The Founders wrote it to be a clear limit to federal power and reach. It is clearly a constitution that aims to preserve the liberty of the people of the United States.
My League of Women Voters chapter is using this for a study on the Constitution. The author is coming from a definite conservative/right wing pov but the information is still valid and good to know, especially these days.
[edited from the original for clarity] I would be careful using this book as a single source to read the documents.
